Mrs Charlotte E. Gubbins


Born in 1839, Charlotte Emily Cosby was the daughter of Sydney Cosby of Stradbally Hall, County Laois, Ireland.

On 22 August 1866 she married Major (later Lieutenant-General) James Gubbins of the 23rd (Royal Welsh Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot.

The couple appear on the 1871 census, living at Norton Manor, Norton, Wales. They had one daughter, Emily Mabel, aged 3 at the time of the census. The household comprised 14 servants. James Gubbins gave as his profession ‘Colonel Infantry Half Pay’. He was invested as a Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1881.

They appear on the 1891 census living at Longmead, Bishopstoke, Hampshire. Emily Mabel, now 23, was still unmarried. The household comprised 10 servants.

Lieutenant-General Gubbins died in 1894. Mrs Gubbins died in 1900, aged 60.
