A cabinet card portrait of a young mother gazing adoringly at her baby, who is lying in an elaborate cot festooned in white.

Photographed by Siza of Georgetown, British Guiana, a British colony on the northern coast of South America. It gained independence in 1966, since when it has been known as Guyana.
