Monument to the Wigtown Martyr

The monument to Margaret Wilson in Sterling Cemetery, Scotland. She was executed by drowning in 1685 for refusing to swear an oath declaring the King as head of the church. Her death became part of the martyrology of the Presbyterian churches and she was commemorated as the most famous of the Wigtown Martyrs.

The monument depicts Margaret Wilson reading the Bible with her young sister Agnes, while a guardian angel watches over them both.
