M. Jourdan

M. Jourdan

A pencilled inscription verso in a period hand identifies the sitters as Jourdan of the Opéra-Comique. This is probably the tenor Jourdan who created the role of Gervais in Auber's Manon Lescaut when it was premièred on 23 February 1856 by the Opéra-Comique at the second Salle Favart in Paris.

He also sang the role of the 'Recitant' in Hector Berlioz's L'enfance du Christ when it was first performed at the Salle Herz in Paris on 10 December 1854, with Berlioz conducting and soloists from the Opéra-Comique.
