Lady Airey and Hon Katherine Airey


A carte-de-visite portrait of Lady Harriet Airey, wife of the British general Richard Airey (1803-1881), known as Sir Richard Airey between 1855 and 1876, in which year he was raised to the peerage as 1st Baron Airey of Killingworth in the County of Northumberland.

In 1838, Richard Airey married his cousin, Harriet Mary Everard Talbot, daughter of James Talbot, 3rd Baron Talbot of Malahide.

On 14 September 1865 their only daughter, Hon Katherine Margaret Airey (d. 22 May 1896) married Sir Geers Cottrell, 3rd Baronet.

Lord Airey died on 14 September 1881 at the house of Lord Wolseley, at Leatherhead. At his death, his title became extinct.
