Knaresborough in North Yorkshire

A carte-de-visite showing a fine view of the River Nidd, the railway viaduct and Knaresborough, a market town and spa in North Yorkshire, four miles east of Harrogate.

Built to carry a branch of the Leeds and Thirsk Railway, this elegant stone viaduct over the River Nidd stands 78ft above the water and was completed in 1851. Its engineer Thomas Grainger, who also worked on the Arthington Viaduct, designed the four-span bridge to blend with the architecture and character of the town. It is still used by trains today.

Photographed by H. C. Booth of Harrowgate [Yorkshire].
