Kate Hamilton Fergusson


A hand-coloured carte-de-visite portrait of Katherine Hamilton Fergusson (1840-1932).

Born on 3 December 1840, she was the second daughter of the Scottish surgeon William Fergusson, created 1st Baronet of Spitalhaugh in 1866, and his wife Helen Hamilton née Ranken.

The family appear on the 1861 census living at 16 George Street (now St George's Street), Hanover Square, London. Also present on the night of the census were her parents, her three brothers, her two sisters and seven servants. The family were still living at the same address in 1871.

Kate appears on the 1901 census living at Broomlee House in West Linton, a village in the Scottish Borders 16 miles from Edinburgh, with her brother Charles and her unmarried sister Helen.

Kate Fergusson died unmarried on 23 December 1932 and was buried in the family vault in St Andrew's Kirkyard, West Linton, Peebleshire.
