John Folwer

John Fowler of Studley Royal

A carte-de-visite portrait of John Fowler of Studley Royal in North Yorkshire.

He appears on the 1861 census living on the grounds of Studley Hall, the home of George Frederick Samuel Robinson, the 2nd Earl de Grey and Ripon (later the Marquess of Ripon). The Earl described himself as 'Peer and Under-Secretary of State'. John Fowler gave 'Park Keeper' as his profession. He was born at Byram in North Yorkshire in or about 1792. Also present on the night of the census were his wife Jane, his son George, and his granddaughter Mary Anne.

Photographed by A.H. Clarke of Ripon.

Dated verso in pencil in a period hand 15 September 1864, so John Fowler would have been about 72 years old when this portrait was taken.
