John Arkwright

A carte-de-visite portrait of John Hungerford Arkwright (1833-1905) of Hampton Court, Hope-under-Dinmore, Herefordshire. A great-grandson of the inventor and entrepreneur Sir Richard Arkwright, he appears on the 1861 census, aged 27, living at his ancestral home with his widowed mother, four sisters and four younger brothers. He described himself as a 'Landed Proprietor, Justice of the Peace, and Deputy Lieutenant'. Also present on the night of the census were some 20 servants.

Photographed by T. and J. Holroyd of Harrogate in Yorkshire.
