Hon. Walter Philip Alexander

Hon. Walter Philip Alexander

A carte-de-visite of the Honourable Walter Philip Alexander (1849-1934).

Identified in the Silvy daybooks as the 'Child of Lady Clarendon', the sitter was identified on the album page as 'Walter Alexander'. Given that the album contained many other portraits of the Alexander and Grimston families, the album inscription is, I think, more likely to be the correct one. Furthermore, of the three other sitters on the same page in the Silvy daybooks, at least one is demonstrably misidentified.

Hon. Walter Philip Alexander was born on 9 February 1849, the second son of James Du Pre Alexander, 3rd Earl of Caledon and his wife Lady Jane née Grimston. He entered the army and gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 2nd Dragoons (Royal Scots Greys). He fought in the Boer War between 1899 and 1900.

On 13 April 1882 he married his cousin, Margaret Katherine Grimston, daughter of Reverend Hon. Francis Sylvester Grimston.

Colonel Hon. Walter Alexander died on 30 October 1934.

Photographed by Camille Silvy of London in 1860.
