Hon Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe

A carte-de-visite portrait of Somerset John Gough-Calthorpe (1831-1912).

Born on 23 January 1831, he was the fourth son of Frederick Gough-Calthorpe, 4th Baron Calthorpe, and Lady Charlotte Sophia Somerset, eldest daughter of the 6th Duke of Beaufort.

He is listed in Hart's Army List (1860) as a Major in the 5th Regiment of Dragoon Guards. According to the footnotes, he had previously served in the Crimea as an ADC to Lord Raglan, had fought in the battles of Alma, Balaclava and Inkerman and was present at the siege of Sebastopol.

He appears on the 1861 census living with his valet and groom in a lodging house at 22 Old Steine, Brighton.

On 28 January 1862 he married Mrs Frederick Crewe (née Eliza Maria Chamier), only child of Captain Frederick Chamier of the Royal Navy.

Two of his older brothers succeed as Baron Calthorpe, but both died childless. A third brother died at the age of sixteen. Jack Gough-Calthorpe succeeded as 7th Baron Calthorpe on 22 July 1910, at the age of seventy-nine. He died on 12 November 1912 at the age of eighty-one, and was succeeded by his only son.

From an album compiled by his brother Augustus Gough-Calthorpe, later 6th Baron Calthorpe. He is identified in the album as 'Jack' when he appears on his own; then, after his marriage, he and his wife are identified as 'The Sommys'.
