Hon Augustus Gough-Calthorpe

Hon Augustus Gough-Calthorpe

A carte-de-visite portrait of The Hon Augustus Gough-Calthorpe (1829-1910), from 1893 6th Baron Calthorpe.

Augustus Cholmondeley Gough-Calthorpe was born on 8 November 1829, the third son of Frederick, 4th Baron Calthorpe and Lady Charlotte Sophia Somerset, eldest daughter of the 6th Duke of Beaufort.

On 22 July 1869 he married Maud Augusta, youngest daughter of The Hon Octavius Duncombe.

When his elder brother died unmarried on 25 June 1893, another brother having died at the age of sixteen, Augustus Gough-Calthorpe succeeded as 6th Baron Calthorpe.

Educated at Eton and Merton College, Oxford (MA, 1855), he was something of an agriculturalist, introducing at Elvetham a herd of shorthorn cattle, Southdown sheep, and Berkshire pigs. He was a generous donator of land to Birmingham city (1894) and university (1900).

He died on 22 July 1910 at the age of eighty. He was survived by four daughters, but his only son predeceased him by four years. He was therefore succeeded by his younger brother.

Photographed in 1861 by Merrick of Brighton.
