Hon Aldred Lumley


Born on 16 November 1857, Aldred Frederick George Beresford Lumley was the son of the 9th Earl of Scarborough. After his education at Eton, he followed a career in the Army. He succeeded his father in 1884, becoming the 10th Earl of Scarborough.

On 8 April 1899 he married Lucy Cecilia Dunn-Gardner, the widow of Colonel Robert Ashton. The marriage produced one daughter, Lady Serena Lumley, grandmother of the present 6th Baron Westbury.

Scarbrough was appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) shortly before his retirement from the Territorial Force in 1921. He died, aged 87, on 4 March 1945.
