A Woodburytype portrait of the actress and actor-manager Gertrude Kingston (1862-1937). Born Gertrude Angela Kohnstamm at Islington in London, in her youth she studied art in Berlin and Paris and later published three illustrated books.

She was in great demand on the London stage throughout most of her career. In 1910 she was briefly the lessee and actor-manager of the Little Theatre in the Adelphi in London. Her final performance was as Elizabeth I in When Essex Died in 1932. In 1937 she published her autobiopgraphy Curtsey While You're Thinking.

Gertrude Kingston died at the Empire Nursing Home in Westminster in London in 1937, aged 75.
