Emperor Maximilian's firing squad


The firing squad which shot Emperor Maximilian of Mexico on the Cerro de las Campanas [Hill of Bells] on on 19 June 1867.

Although Maximilian bribed the seven riflemen not to shoot him in the head, one did anyway. Maximilian’s body was embalmed and displayed in Mexico before being returned to Austria and buried in the Imperial crypt in Vienna the following year.
