Elizabeth L. Comstock


The Quaker Elizabeth L. Comstock (1815-1891) of Michigan was known both as a prison reformer and for her relief work among freed slaves. She is sometimes called ‘The Elizabeth Fry of America’.

A pencilled inscription verso in a period hand reads ‘I am making these for sale at 25¢, all … [word illegible] cost goes to her charity.’
