Duchess of Teck and her children

Duchess of Teck and her children

A carte-de-visite portrait of Princess Mary Adelaide of Cambridge. She was known as the Princess of Cambridge until her marriage, after which she was known first as the Princess of Teck (1866-1871) and then as the Duchess of Teck (1871-1897). Enormously popular with the British public, she was also affectionately known as 'Fat Mary'.

Her eldest child, seen here seated with her head resting on her mother's arm, was Princess Victoria May of Teck, who became the wife of George V and is better known as Queen Mary. The two other children in this portrait are May’s younger brothers, Prince Adolphus (born 1868) and Prince Francis (born 1870). A third son, Prince Alexander, was born in 1874.
