Daisy and Vi

Daisy and Vi

From an album compiled in the 1860s by Augustus Gough-Calthorpe, 6th Baron Calthorpe. The adjacent portrait shows 'Lily and Janie,' probably sisters of the two girls seen here.

These are almost certainly the four daughters of Lord Alfred Spencer-Churchill and his wife, Harriet Louisa Hester née Gough-Calthorpe, daughter of the 4th Baron Calthorpe. Their four daughters were christened Jane, Olivia, Adeline and Violet. Presumably Olivia was known as 'Lily' and Adeline was known as 'Daisy'.

The two girls seen here both married and had families of their own when they grew up. Daisy married Colonel William Hugh Williams on 1 August 1895. She died on 10 January 1937. Violet married Brigadier-General Charles Fitz-Clarence, V.C., on 20 April 1898. She died on 22 December 1941, aged 77. Her son was the 6th Earl of Munster.

Photographed by Naudin of Brompton.

Dated 10 August 1866.
