Crown Prince Friedrich and Princess Victoria

Crown Prince Friedrich and Princess Victoria

A carte-de-visite portrait of Queen Victoria’s eldest child, ‘Vicky’, together with her husband, Crown Prince Friedrich of Prussia, known as ‘Fritz’ within the family. The couple were married on 25 January 1858 at the Chapel Royal, St. James’s Palace. The bridegroom turned out to be the favourite of all Queen Victoria’s sons-in-law. When he finally succeeded to the throne as Emperor Friedrich III in 1888, he was already dying of the throat cancer that was to kill him three short months later.

Photographed by Hills and Saunders of Eton, Harrow and Oxford.
