Crown Prince Friedrich

Crown Prince Friedrich

A carte-de-visite portrait of Crown Prince Friedrich of Prussia, (1831-1888), later King of Prussia and Emperor Friedrich III of Germany.

Known as ‘Fritz’ within the family, he was the husband of Queen Victoria’s eldest child, ‘Vicky’, the Princess Royal. The couple were married on 25 January 1858 at the Chapel Royal, St. James’s Palace. The bridegroom turned out to be the favourite of all Queen Victoria’s sons-in-law. When he finally succeeded to the throne as Emperor Friedrich III in 1888, he was already dying of throat cancer and only reigned for three months.

Photographed by L. Haase of Berlin.
