Clara Strutt

Clara Strutt

A carte-de-visite portrait of Clara Strutt (1861-1863), youngest child of the wealthy cotton manufacturer and philanthropist George Henry Strutt (1826-1895) of Bridge Hill House, Belper. The bashful woman hiding her face behind the child's head is probably her mother, Agnes Anne Strutt (née Ashton).

Clara Strutt's birth was registered in the district of Belper in Derbyshire in 1861. She died on 1 June 1863 'at Bridge-hill, Belper, after a few hours illness [...] aged two years and three weeks' (Derby Mercury, 3 June 1863).
