Born in Lewisham, Charles Ernest Vivian was baptised at Creed in Cornwall on 17 September 1868. His father was merchant James Edward Vivian, formerly of the 13th Light Dragoons; his mother was Bertha Carlyon Vivian (née Bertha Carlyon Barham).

The family, together with their four servants, appear on the 1871 census living at Perry House in Lewisham.

His father died in 1879, aged only 54. Charles’s mother and younger sister Nora appear on the 1881 census living at the home of Bertha’s parents at Kenwyn in Cornwall but Charles was elsewhere the night the census was taken.

On 25 October 1894, aged 27, he departed London aboard the Drummond Castle bound for Cape Town in South Africa.

Charles Ernest Vivian died, aged 83, on 29 January 1952 at Pietermaritzburg in South Africa.
