Charles Dubois de Nansouty

Charles Dubois de Nansouty

A carte-de-visite portrait of the French general Charles-Marie-Étienne Champion Dubois de Nansouty (1815-1895). After his retirement from the army in the early 1870s, he devoted himself to the establishment of an observatory on the Pic du Midi de Bigorre in the Pyrenees. He spent eight years making meteorological observations in a weather station just below the site of the observatory and in 1875 he celebrated Christmas at the top of the mountain. From 1865 until his death he was president of the Société Ramond, a society of scholars and mountaineers. He also took a keen interest in geology, paleontology and conchology.

Photographer unidentified.
