Cardinal Manning

Cardinal Manning

A carte-de-visite portrait of Cardinal Henry Edward Manning (1808-1892).

An English priest, and one of the leaders of the Oxford Movement which sought to revive ritualism, Manning converted to Roman Catholicism in 1851. In 1865 he became Archbishop of Westminster; he was created a cardinal in 1875.

Photographed by Elliott and Fry of 55, Baker Street, London.

Entered at Stationers' Hall [an essential part of the copyright process] on 14 November 1870.
