Captain Robert Loraine-Grews

A carte-de-visite portrait of Captain Robert Loraine-Grews (1835-1904).

According to a short obituary which appeared in the Gloucester Citizen (16 August 1904): ‘The death occurred on Sunday at Hillfield, East Sheen, of Captain Robert Alfred Loraine-Grews, formerly of the Grove, Taynton, near Gloucester. He was the eldest son of Mr W. C. Loraine, of Caversham Grove, Oxon., and was born in 1835. He assumed the name of Grews by Royal license. Captain Loraine-Grews, who was at one time a captain of the 1st (King’s) Dragoon Guards, was a J.P. for Somerset and Gloucestershire. He married, in 1859, Fanny the daughter of the late Major-General Arbuthnot.’
