An early lawnmower

An early lawnmower

The lawn mower was invented in 1830 by British engineer Edwin Beard Budding. By the time this photograph was taken in the 1860s, Budding's patent had lapsed and other companies had introduced their own machines, in particular Thomas Green and Sons of Leeds and Alexander Shanks of Arbroath.

Photographer and location unidentified.
