Abyssinian soldiers

Abyssinian soldiers

The military expedition to Abyssinia in 1867 was presented to the British public as a patriotic tale of imperial conquest carried out against a hostile and semi-civilized people. This photograph of an unidentified artist’s impression of Abyssinian soldiers, which depicts the Abyssinians as brooding, half-naked warriors, can be read as part of that narrative.

Photographer unidentified.
