The eldest son of the Sultan of Turkey


A carte-de-visite portrait of the eldest son of Sultan Abdul Aziz of Turkey. The Sultan had six wives, by whom he had 12 children. Of these, ten were still alive at the time of his deposition and death in 1876.

The son in this portrait is Prince Yusuf Izz ud-din Effendi, born at the Dolma Bahche Palace in Constantinople on 11 October 1857. He was nine years old when he visited England as part of his father's retinue in July 1867.
