A son of the Sultan of Turkey

A son of the Sultan of Turkey

A carte-de-visite portrait of one of the sons of Sultan Abdul Aziz of Turkey. The Sultan had six wives, by whom he had 12 children. Of these, ten were still alive at the time of his deposition and death in 1876.

The son in this portrait is possibly Prince Yusuf Izz ud-din Effendi, born at the Dolma Bahche Palace in Constantinople on 11 October 1857. He would have been ten years old when the Sultan visited England in 1867 and therefore about the same age as the boy seen here.

Photographed by William and Daniel Downey of London and Newcastle.
