A Newhaven fishwife selling fish

A carte-de-visite showing a scene mocked up in a photographer's studio representing a housemaid buying tonight's dinner from a Newhaven fishwife.

With their striped skirts and their 'picturesque' bonnets, the women of Newhaven, a small fishing community near Edinburgh, proved an early and popular subject with local photographers.

Photographed by Douglas of Edinburgh.
