A German rower in Japan

A Japanese cabinet card portrait of a member of the German rowing crew. A newspaper clipping pasted to the reverse of the mount reads: ‘An accident has deprived the German crew of the International Fours of their stroke, and the crew will now be ..’ and four names follow, of which one, R. Fachtmann, has been arrowed in pencil. An inked inscription in a period hand on the back of the mount reads: ‘Kiogo (Japan) / October 1881 / R. Fachtmann / s/e [?] / F. Eckstein.’

Photographer unidentified, but even without the inscription on the back of the mount, one could tell from the column behind Herr Fachtmann that the photograph was taken in Asia.
