A Cretan brigand

A Cretan brigand

An inked inscription verso in a period hand identifies the sitter as a 'Candioti,' which is the Italian demonym for someone from Candia. Until the nineteenth century, this was both the Italian and English word for someone from Crete, or sometimes specifically from the island's capital [modern day Heraklion].

Photographed by P. Soritopoulos of Athens.
