A 'hidden mother'

A 'hidden mother'

A carte-de-visite portrait of a baby seated on a woman's lap, with the woman concealed under a check shawl. The genre is sometimes known as 'the hidden mother', although the woman holding the child may very well be a nursemaid rather than the child's parent.

An American tax stamp on the reverse of the mount covers the photographer's backplate.
