Lydia Foote with guitar

Lydia Foote with guitar and glass of wine

A carte-de-visite portrait of the English actress Lydia Foote (1843-1892), seen here as May Edwards, the friendless guitar player and singer who appeared in Tom Taylor's The Ticket-of-Leave Man.

First performed at the Olympic Theatre in London on 27 May 1863, the part was created by Kate Saville, but Lydia Foote took over three months later on 31 August. She also starred in the revival at the Adelphi in 1879.
