In Chatham Burial Ground

In Chatham Burial Ground

This is probably the extension to the churchyard of St Mary's in Dock Road that opened in 1828 and remained in use until the new cemetery was opened in Maidstone Road in 1870.

The photograph shows a woman and child standing amidst the gravestones. The nearest stone commemorates Richard Head, who died on 1 November 1862, aged 78.

Other gravestones commemorated Sarah, wife of James Cork; Mrs Mary Elizabeth Head; John Relf and his family; and Elizabeth Sophia, daughter of Robert Collins Burfield. Robert Collins Burfield was a grocer, cheesemonger and licensee in Chatham.

Photographed by R. Taylor of Chatham.
