Built between 1867 and 1873 on a hillside in Lestelle-Bétharram, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department of France, the 'Calvaire' [Calvary] of Bétharram is a series of fifteen white chapels each representing one of the Stations of the Cross. At the summit of the hill, a tableau represents Jesus on the cross with the two thieves who were crucified at the same time on either side of him. Standing at the foot of the cross are figures representing St John of the Cross and Jesus's mother.
An extensive text printed on the back of the mount includes a prayer to 'la mère de douleur.'
