Clara Rousby in 'Measure for Measure'

A carte-de-visite portrait of the actress Clara Rousby — frequently called 'The Beautiful Mrs Rousby' — seen here dressed as the novice nun Isabella in William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure.

I can find no evidence that Mrs Rousby ever appeared in a production of Measure for Measure, so presumably she appears here in the role simply as an excuse to look pretty in a wimple and veil.

Photographed by the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company.

Entered at Stationers' Hall, an essential part of the copyright process, by George Swan Nottage and Howard John Kennard on 19 April 1870. The photograph is described as 'Photograph of Mrs Rousby as Isabel, large bust, hands crossed.'
