Five servants

A carte-de-visite portrait of five servants, photographed outside, each holding an item to represent their role in the household.

The man on the far left clearly works with horses. The woman next him, holding a dustpan and brush, must be a housemaid. The woman in the middle holding a bowl presumably works in the kitchen. The next woman appears to be holding a teapot, and the man on the far right is obviously the gardener, with a watering can and a plant in a flowerpot.

An inked inscription (in biro) verso reads: 'My Grandfather's staff / Howard (coachman) / Esther (cook) / 2 maids & Henry / gardener.'
