Green and Son

Green and Son

A carte-de-visite portrait of two men holding the tools of their trade. The horseshoes suggest that they might be farriers or perhaps blacksmiths. They were identified on the album page as 'Green and Son.'

Photographed by C. Antill of Loughborough in Leicestershire.

Born at Barrow upon Soar in 1827, Charles Antill was the son of William Antill, a ‘stocking maker,’ according to the 1841 census, but probably in fact a frame work knitter.

He appears on the 1861 census, aged 34, a 'Photographic Artist' living at Mountsorrel, a village just south of Loughborough.

He was still in Mountsorrel in 1871, a 'Photographer' living and working with his sons Charles (21) and Ernest (17).

He died at Mountsorrel on 29 December 1875, leaving an estate valued at £300. He was 49 years old.
