Newhaven fishwife

Newhaven fishwife

A carte-de-visite portrait of a Scottish woman wearing the tradition costume of the village of Newhaven, which lies about two miles north of Edinburgh on the Firth of Forth.

An extensive printed caption gives some information about the women of Newhaven. According to the opening paragraph: 'Among the many varieties of female dress to be seen now-a-days, few attract the notice of strangers more than that of the NEWHAVEN FISHWIFE. It is so picturesque, and her appearance so clean and tidy, that everyone is struck with the uniqueness of her costume — perhaps the most characteristic to be seen anywhere in Britain.'

Photographed by Duncan Macara of Edinburgh.
