Mrs Rousby as 'Joan of Arc'

Mrs Rousby as 'Joan of Arc'

A carte-de-visite portrait of the actress Clara Rousby, seen here in Joan of Arc by Tom Taylor, which finally opened at the Queen's Theatre in London on 10 April 1871. The production was a long time coming and was much written about for many months before its opening night.

Photographed by the London Stereoscopic and Photographic Company.

The photograph was entered at Stationers' Hall — an integral part of the copyright process — on 22 May 1871 by George Swan Nottage and Howard John Kennard. The form that the two men deposited described the image as: 'Photograph of Mrs Rousby as Joan of Arc, ¾ length standing, head over her right shoulder looking down on sword.'
