'Little Jane,' died 1799

The inscription on the gravestone reads, in part: 'Sacred to the memory of "Little Jane" who died 30th Jan[uar]y 1799 in the 15th year of her age.'

Jane Squibb was a poor but pious girl who lived at Brading on the Isle of Wight and died there of tuberculosis in 1799. Her story was later popularized by the local deacon, Legh Richmond, in his 'Annals of the Poor' (1814). Her gravestone and the cottage where she died are still tourist attractions today.
