Father Ignatius

Father Ignatius

A carte-de-visite portrait of Father Ignatius (born Joseph Leycester Lyne), whose attempts to re-establish monasticism and a form of pre-Reformation but non-papal Catholcism in Great Britain were largely ridiculed by his contemporaries. The monastery that he founded near Abergavenny in Wales eventually failed. He died on 16 October 1908.

Photographed by Samuel A. Walker of London.

An inked inscription verso in a period hand reads: 'Brighton / Dec. 1st 1872.'
