Dominican friars

Dominican friars

A cabinet card portrait of Dominican friars.

The round-faced man in the front row (second from the left) is Father Vincent King, who was one of the friars at Woodchester, the Dominican monastery and novice house established in Gloucestershire in 1851.

I suspect that the bearded man next to him in the front row is the Very Rev. Dr. James Ambrose Dominic Aylward (1813-1872), who became the first Prior of Woodchester in 1854. He was also several times Provincial of the Dominicans in England and was for many years prior of St Andrew's, Newcastle. He died, aged 59, on 5 October 1872 at the Dominican Monastery in Hinckley, Leicestershire.

Photographed by Barraud and Jerrard of Gloucester Place, London.
