Charles Dickens in New York

A carte-de-visite portrait of the English novelist Charles Dickens (1812-1870), popular for his memorable characters and his portrayals of the social evils of Victorian England.

Dickens made two separate trips to the United States. The first time he travelled there with his wife in 1842. The second time was for a reading tour that began at Liverpool on 9 November 1867. His readings began in early December and continued till his departure the following April. In all, he performed 76 readings and earned a total of £19,000. This portrait was almost certainly taken during that reading tour.
