William Winhall, tobacconist

William Winhall, tobacconist

A cabinet card portrait of a proud tradesman.

William Winhall was a tobacconist with premises at 193, Bethnal Green Road in London's East End. He was delighted enough with his shop's new display of pipes to have his portrait taken with them at the local photographer's. According to the 1881 and 1891 censuses, his older brother Ambrose, a 'Cabinet Carver', lived at the same address. Since both men seem equally proud of the display case, it seems likely Ambrose is the other man in this photo.

According to an announcement placed in the London Gazette by his executors, William Winhall died at Bethnal Green on 1 September 1899. He was described as an ‘Importer and Factor of Tobacconists’ Fancy Goods'.

Photographed by Pitt and Son of 213, Bethnal Green Road, London.
