Baron Bentinck

Baron Bentinck

An inscription in pencil on the reverse in a period hand gives the name of the sitter as 'Baron Bentinck'.

This is probably Baron Adolf von Bentinck, Secretary of the legation for the Netherlands at Copenhagen, Stockholm, Berlin and Vienna successively. He was councillor of the Dutch legation in London for seven years, and envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary in London from 25 August 1851 until his death. He died at 26 Eaton Square on 2 March 1868 at the age of 70.

Photographed by Camille Silvy of London in 1860.
