'The Streets of London'

'The Streets of London'

Originally a French play in seven acts by E. Brisebarre and Eugène Nus, it was first performed at the Paris Ambigu in 1856 with the title Les pauvres de Paris. As he often did, Boucicault lifted the plot in its entirety for an English-language translation in five acts, which he presented as The Streets of New York in New York in 1857. The play proved so successful that a version was subsequently adapted for British audiences with the title The Streets of London; this was changed to The Streets of Liverpool when it played there, and had other suitable title changes wherever else it played.

Photographed by W. and A.H. Fry of Brighton.

An inked inscription on the reverse of the mount gives the date, 11 March 1870.
