Holman Hunt

Holman Hunt

A carte-de-visite portrait of the British painter William Holman Hunt (1827-1910), one of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848.

When his first wife died in childbirth in Italy, he subsequently married her sister, which at the time was illegal under British law.

Obsessed with realistic detail, from 1854 onwards Hunt travelled to Syria and Palestine to paint biblical subjects. His works include The Awakening Conscience (1853) and The Light of the World (1854).

Photographed by the London Stereoscopic Company.
