Lord Leighton

Lord Leighton

A cabinet card portrait of the British sculptor and painter Frederick Leighton (1830-1896), later Lord Frederick Leighton.

Leighton’s historical subjects, especially his scenes from classical antiquity, were widely admired during his enormously successful career, for example, Captive Andromache (1888). His Cimabue Carried in Procession (1855) was bought by Queen Victoria. In 1878 Leighton became President of the Royal Academy and the same year he was knighted at Windsor. He was created a baronet eight years later.

Photographed by the London Stereoscopic Company.
