Sir Alfred Joseph Doughty-Tichborne

The 'Rightful Heir' in the Tichborne Trial

A carte-de-visite portrait of the 'Rightful Heir' in the famously long-running Tichborne Claimant trial.

When Sir Roger Doughty-Tichborne was lost at sea in 1854, his father, the 10th baronet, was still alive. Sir James Doughty-Tichborne died on 11 June 1862 and was succeeded by his younger son, Sir Alfred Joseph Doughty-Tichborne, who became the 11th baronet. When he died on 22 February 1866, his wife was six months pregnant. The son she bore on 28 May 1866 was, from the moment of his birth, the 12th baronet. This is a portrait of that boy, Sir Henry Alfred Joseph Doughty-Tichborne, taken when he was 5 years old. He died on 27 July 1910, aged 44.
